The King Who Hears Your Sighs

Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem as He prepares to go to the cross. It is fitting, then, that this sermon comes to a passage about a king, the devotion of his people, and the love that binds them together. In 2 Samuel 23:13-17, Pastor Donny reflects on David in one of his darkest moments and shows how this brief but powerful story reveals the shape of true gospel character.

As David hides in a cave, longing for home and for the assurance of God's presence, his mighty men respond with astonishing devotion. Through their courage, loyalty, and sacrifice, we see four lessons about gospel character: life in this world is often a wilderness, we are not meant to endure it alone, every victory is a gift of God’s grace, and true obedience flows from love for the King.

Ultimately, this passage does not point us to David as the hero, but to Jesus, the greater King. Where David was strengthened by the devotion of his friends, Jesus entered the ultimate darkness for us. He heard our deepest longings, gave His life to bring us home, and secured the victory we could never win for ourselves.
