- Money and Its PowerMark 10:17-27Donny Cho • Nov 1, 2026
Why do good, obedient people still hold back their money from God? In Mark 10, a rich young ruler runs to Jesus, falls on his knees, and asks what he must do to inherit eternal life. He keeps the commandments and wants Jesus to confirm that he is good. Jesus looks at him and loves him. Then Jesus tells him he lacks one thing, and the man walks away in deep distress because he has great wealth.
This sermon looks at the power of money, why it has that power, and how we can be free from it. Money shapes our judgment and changes how we see reality. It promises the identity, security, freedom, and worth we lost when we turned away from God in the garden. Through the story of a famous New York tower and a flaw that no one saw, the sermon shows how one missing piece can put a whole life at risk. Then it points to Jesus, the greater rich young ruler, who feels the same distress in Gethsemane but does not walk away. He gives up everything, including his life, so that we can have him as our treasure. When Jesus becomes our treasure, money loses its grip and we are free to give.
Whether you are exploring Christianity, wrestling with doubt, or looking for encouragement, this message asks a simple question: is Jesus enough? Take a few minutes to watch.
