Summary

Our world lacks a true way to process suffering—we have no theology of suffering. The Israelites in Numbers 21:4-9 faced this same struggle. Though God provided for them in the wilderness, they rejected His care, leading to the diagnosis of their condition: sin, a disease that distorts our desires and alienates us from God. Their grumbling turned to despair when venomous serpents struck—a test revealing the depth of their spiritual sickness. But God did not abandon them. Instead, He prescribed a cure: they had to look upon the bronze serpent and be healed, foreshadowing Christ, who became the curse for us so that we might live.

Like the Israelites, we often misdiagnose our discontent. We chase after temporary remedies, thinking success, relationships, or comfort will heal us, yet we still feel restless. The Gospel offers the true antidote—Jesus, who took on our alienation so we could be brought home to God.
